Inbound Links - A Look At Their Benefits
If you have a website or a blog, you know how important it is to be ranked high on the search engines. You also know the importance of understanding SEO and how to maximize a site. What you may not be aware of is the importance of backlinks. You have probably seen the word backlinks used in SEO but are not quite sure what it means or how it works.
First, you have to understand exactly what backlinks are. Basically, this is a link from another website directed to yours. These can also be called inbound links and how many you have can determine the popularity of the website. An easy way to understand it is to imagine that each link to your website is a vote by a search engine. The more websites that link to you, the more votes you get in a search engine. And, if these are quality links, then the website gets to go up a rung higher in rank.
You will find that there are two different kinds of backlinks. There is the one-way link and the reciprocal link. The one that carries the most quality potential and gives you a better vote is the one-way backlinks. What this means is that someone has placed a link on their site, directing people to yours. However, you do not have a link on your site directing people to the other site, making it a one-way link.
The reciprocal backlink is the second type and is not that popular. These do not get votes or very few votes because search engines just do not care about these site, although in years past they did. This type of link is where a website directs a link to your site and you return the favor by then directing a link to their site. This may be a good way to get noticed at first, but it is not a recommended practice if you want votes.
Now for the one-way backlinks to be considered quality links and gain you a vote there is a certain criteria it needs to match. First, it needs to link back to your website with the keyword that your website is optimized for. Second, it has to have the same theme as yours. This means that when an inbound link comes from another site, that content from that other site is related to yours, making it more relevant. If the inbound link comes from a totally unrelated site, then the quality is almost null.
This doesn’t happen overnight, building up good backlinks. However, if you want to be ranked higher, then it is the best way to do it. You can attract those inbound links by updating your site regularly with unique, quality content. If you keep your site interesting and up to date, other webmasters and bloggers will visit and if you please them, they’ll please you by directing a link to your site from theirs.
The reasons these links are an important part of the SEO process is because your website stands a higher chance of being added to search engines faster. Then, the more inbound links that build up, the higher the ranking you get in the search engines, which in turn makes the site more visible. The more visible the site is in the search engine results, the more traffic you can pull in.
One good way to build quality inbound links is through article marketing. Doing this process well requires a great deal of knowledge and time. Many businesses rely on a good article marketing service, although that may be beyond the resources of the casual blogger.
Building up good quality inbound links can be time consuming and requires a lot of effort and patience, and even money at times. But if you want your website visible in the search engines, it is a necessary step. It is important not to underestimate the importance of backlinks, if you want a successful site then you need to understand what they are and work on getting those links directed to your site.
