Deciding Whether To Build Your Own Small Business Website.
Having a professional create a small business website for you need not be be expensive, it will still hit your bottom-line amount but the idea is that your new website will generate more sales and pay for itself. You may be thinking about having a go at creating your own website. Ask yourself these questions. To start with, do you have spare time available to dedicate to building a website? secondly, what do you want to gain from your new website?
You can work out how to design and build a basic website for yourself. That is not to say that web design is not a tremendously in depth subject requiring training and talent, but with some study and application you can gain adequate results at a basic level.
For you to be successful in building your own website you will need to be confident in your ability to pick up new things easily and proficient at understanding the way to navigate new systems. There are some crucial skills that need to be acquired before starting a website build, these cover but are not limited to CSS, HTML and basic website design and layout.
We come to our initial question and the root of it. Do you really have enough spare time to acquire these skills?
Maybe you are fed up of working for others and plan on developing your own business, so you are happy to put time into this project. Get yourself online and check out some tutorial sites. Find and purchase the latest ‘Build Your Own Website’ book on Amazon. There is plenty available, much of which will point you in the right direction.
You could however be considering this option from a completely different situation. Perhaps you are already finding there are not enough hours in your day. Trying to find time to build your own business website in this situation is not a good option for you, as not only will your work life balance suffer, you will be unlikely to produce a website that will do your business justice if it is not possible to fully focus on working on it.
Secondly, you need to ask yourself. What is it that you want your new website to achieve for you? You need to have a think about where your niche within the market sits. Have a look at some of your direct competitors websites.
If you are wanting your website to give you a basic web presence with your contact details, enabling potential customers in your local area to find and contact you. A small site appearing in the search engine results may be all you need. Then a simple website fulfilling this requirement is a workable objective to reach.
The type of business you are in may however be considered a more professional category. In which case a basic looking site may not give your clients the right first impression of your business. Do some study online. What type of quality site do your competitors have? Be realistic, if you feel the standard is higher than you are likely to be able to achieve yourself, you would probably be better off hiring a professional web designer.
To summarise all of the above; If you are confident in your ability to create a website of a high enough standard and feel you have enough time to commit to the job in hand, then do it!. If you are unsure, then you should hire a professional. An important point to note is that creating your website is just stage one, if no one can locate it on Google then you have wasted your time. For your website to be successful, you need it to reach high in the search engine rankings.
If you are a small business owner and you don’t have some sort of web presence to promote it then you are missing out on key potential customers and sales. Creating a website for you business may not be too difficult to do by yourself but you first need to work out whether you have the time to learn how to do it and whether or not the results will bring you increased sales.
