Successful Rabbit Farming

For many people rabbit farming sounds as crazy as herding cats, but to others it is a good business that is good for the economy and a healthy choice in this fat laden country. A Rabbit farm from a simple project can become an excellent family business. Sometimes it could be a choice to eat healthier by choosing an animal that can output up to 300 pounds (150 kg) of usable low fat low cholesterol meat per year in a small area and uses fewer supplies than other meat producing animals. For this reason, many farmers preferred to raise chickens in the past. They were small, compact, easy to feed, and were simple to catch, clean, and store away in the freezer for winter. Today very few subdivision or city parks would consider zoning for a brood of chickens, but a rabbit hutch or two might go unnoticed by neighbors and without complaints from the neighbors, officials will not poke around either.

However raising meat rabbits is not the only intent behind rabbit farming. Some kinds of rabbits like angora rabbits for example have a wonderful wool that can be used for producing warm cloths. These rabbits and their wool are in demand for those people who are creating natural crafts and are often seen at craft shows and fairs having their wool removed and woven to show it can be done without harming the rabbit at all.

Rabbits may also be raised and sold to facilities that are performing some types of research. As with raising rabbits for meat, there are moral issues involved for many people who do not believe in using animals in clinical studies. Many medical breakthroughs are discovered using rabbits and other animals however, there are individuals who believe the price is just too high regardless of the outcome. Before choosing this area of rabbit farming, the animals should be properly screened for age, weight, and other criteria needed by the research. Raising specific animals can be more profitable, but intensely detailed records must be kept to be sure the animals match the rigorous standards required.

No matter which line of rabbit raising the breeder selects, they should be conscious of disease control and maintaining sanitary living, breeding, butchering, and storage facilities for the rabbits. Your efforts in breeding rabbits will be effective, if you are in position to control these variables.
